Kimsey
At the very edge of the Ballard Canyon AVA, facing the Sta Rita Hills, lies Kimsey Vineyard. Nestled amongst horse ranches, hidden behind a large rought-iron gate on a small inconspicuous plot, the vineyard oozes intention and careful planning. The center of the vineyard gently rolls across a small ridge that faces both east and west, with rows oriented to take full advantage of the characteristics those two aspects offer. The wind rips through in the afternoon, often a bigger factor affecting the farming of the fruit than the sun or rain. Though close to both Larner and Stolpman Vineyards in proximity, the soil at Kimsey could not be more different, composed of a dense clay loam with big chunks of limestone jutting out on the surface. It’s peaceful, yet also invigorating.
Kimsey’s soil profile is very unique within not only our vineyards, but also within the neighborhood.
