Larner

Draped across the southern point of the Ballard Canyon appellation at nearly 700 feet above sea level lies Larner Vineyard. Here, 35 acres of southeast- facing slopes are planted almost entirely to Rhône varieties, mainly Syrah. We lease from two southeast-facing blocks that we lovingly call “The Sandbox.” The soil here is composed of a four-foot layer of Marina Sand on top of chalk bedrock leading to vines that really struggle. The result is intensely concentrated red fruit with silky tannins and exotic aromatics.

Wines from Larner

Syrah
Rating 94 - Jeb Dunnuck

“It’s another ripe, sexy, yet also elegant wine from this estate that has lots of darker berry fruits, notes of peppery herbs, leather, and spice, full-bodied richness, a round, silky mouthfeel, and a great finish. It’s no shrinking violet at over 15% alcohol, but the balance is spot on, it has beautiful purity, and it should drink well for 7-8 years or more.” (8/29/2022)
